Privacy Policy
In short: RightLeftAndCenter reads an article — and its reader discussion, where there is one — only when you choose to analyse it, sends that content to our service, which uses an AI provider to produce the brief, the discussion insights and answers to your questions, and keeps your account, questions and History so the product works across sessions. Your publisher sign-in stays in your browser. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
1. Who we are
RightLeftAndCenter (“RLC”, “we”) provides a Chrome extension and the online service it uses. The controller of your personal data is the individual who operates RightLeftAndCenter. You can reach us at privacy@rightleftandcenter.com.
2. Information we process
- Account: your Google sign-in identifier, e-mail address and whether it is verified, and when you last signed in.
- Installation: an identifier for your extension installation, the account it is linked to, and when it was last seen.
- Articles you choose to analyse: the article’s address, title, byline and text.
- Reader discussions: where an analysed article has one, the comments shown under it — their text, the display names the comment platform shows, reply structure and recommendation counts.
- Your questions and History: the questions you ask, the answers, and the articles you have analysed or asked about, with times.
- Operational records: for each analysis, technical measurements (the AI processing used, its cost and duration), attached to the analysis rather than to you; and a count of your questions per article, to enforce a fair-use limit.
Like any online service, the providers that host our service and this website process technical connection data, such as IP addresses, to deliver and secure them.
What we do not collect
- Your publisher username, password or cookies. The extension reads the page inside your browser; your publisher sign-in is never sent to us.
- Content from pages you have not chosen to analyse, or from sites that are not supported publications.
- Your general browsing history.
- Payment details. RightLeftAndCenter does not take payments today.
3. Why we process it
- to sign you in and keep your account and History available across sessions;
- to produce article briefs, discussion insights and answers to your questions;
- to avoid processing the same article twice, and to enforce fair-use limits;
- to operate, secure and fix the service.
We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it.
Where data-protection law asks for a lawful basis, we rely on providing the service you ask for (our agreement with you) and on our legitimate interest in operating, securing and improving it.
4. Article and discussion content
Nothing about an article is sent to us until you choose to analyse it — by clicking the RLC button on the page, the RLC icon in Chrome’s toolbar, or Analyse in the side panel — and then only on a supported publication. The first time you use a publication, Chrome asks you to allow RightLeftAndCenter to read that publication’s article pages and, where it has one, its comment service.
We store article and discussion content to produce the analysis and so the same article is not processed again. Analyses of an article are shared between the readers who analyse that article; your own questions and History are not. Commenter display names are stored with the comments they belong to but are never shown in anything RightLeftAndCenter produces: discussion insights are paraphrased and never reproduce individual comments.
While the side panel is open, the extension asks our service whether you already have an analysis for the article on screen. That request carries the article’s identifier and your sign-in token, not the article’s content.
5. Account and authentication
You sign in with your Google account through Firebase Authentication, a Google service. We receive your Firebase user identifier, e-mail address and its verified status. Signing out in the extension ends your session on that device.
6. Questions and History
When you use Ask RLC we store your question, the answer, and the article (and, where used, the version of its discussion) it relates to. Ask RLC allows up to 20 questions per article in any rolling 24 hours, which requires counting your questions. History lists the articles you have analysed or asked about. “Remove from History” hides an article from your History list; it does not delete your questions and answers — to delete them, contact us.
7. AI and service providers
| Provider | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Google (Firebase Authentication) | Your Google sign-in and e-mail address | To sign you in |
| OpenAI (API) | Article text, discussion text and your questions, for each analysis or answer | To generate briefs, discussion insights and answers |
| The provider that hosts our service and its database | Everything our service stores, described above | To run the service and its database |
| Cloudflare | Standard connection data for visits to this website | To deliver and protect rightleftandcenter.com |
OpenAI processes this content to return results to us. Under OpenAI’s API terms, content sent through its API is not used to train its models by default; OpenAI may keep it for a limited period under its own policies.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
8. This website: cookies and analytics
rightleftandcenter.com sets no cookies and uses no analytics or third-party trackers. Fonts and images are served from this site. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard connection data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.
9. Retention
- Account information: while your account exists.
- Questions, answers and History: while your account exists, unless you ask us to delete them.
- Article and discussion content and analyses: as needed to provide the service, in line with our agreements with the publications concerned.
There is no automatic deletion schedule yet. To have your account, questions and History deleted, contact us and we will delete them.
10. Security
Access to your data requires your signed-in account, and the extension never handles your publisher credentials.
This website is served only over HTTPS.
11. International transfers
The providers listed above may process data outside the country where you live, including in the United States.
12. Your rights and choices
- You can sign out at any time from the extension, and uninstall it at any time.
- You can remove an article from your History (this hides it; it is not a deletion).
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete your account, questions and History, by contacting us.
Depending on where you live — including under UK data-protection law — you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, and to object to or restrict how it is used. To exercise any of these rights, contact us. If you are in the UK you can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
13. Children
RightLeftAndCenter is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
14. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
RightLeftAndCenter’s use and transfer of information received through the Chrome extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We use this information only to provide and improve the extension’s single purpose described above; we do not transfer it for advertising, to data brokers, or to determine creditworthiness, and we do not allow humans to read it except with your permission, for security purposes, to comply with the law, or where it is aggregated and anonymised for internal operations.
15. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for material changes, tell you in the extension.
