Getting started, using each part of the side panel, and what to do when something looks wrong.

Getting started

  1. Install RightLeftAndCenter from the Chrome Web Store (the listing is coming soon).
  2. Sign in with your Google account when the extension asks.
  3. Open an article on a supported publication. You need your own access to the publication. The panel tells you whether the page you are on is supported.
  4. Click the RLC button on the article, or the RLC icon in Chrome’s toolbar. The side panel opens and the analysis starts.
  5. The first time you use a publication, Chrome asks you to allow RightLeftAndCenter to read that publication’s article pages (and its comment service, where it has one). Choose Allow.

Using Article

The Article surface gives you the article in brief. It works on its own: it does not wait for the discussion and does not need one. Use the rail on the side of the panel to move between Article and Discussion.

Using Discussion

Where the article has a reader discussion, the Discussion surface shows its tone, key themes, leading views against the wider discussion, what the discussion adds, the main disagreements and less common perspectives. Sections with many insights are collapsed; open them to see each point. Insights are paraphrased, never quoted, and never name a commenter.

Using Ask RLC

Type your own question about the article. Answers are grounded in the article and, when it is shown, its discussion; if the material does not support an answer, RLC says so. You can ask up to 20 questions per article in any rolling 24 hours.

History

History lists the articles you have analysed or asked about. Choose one to return to it. “Remove from History” hides an article from the list.

Troubleshooting

Article not recognised — “This page isn’t supported for new analysis.”

RightLeftAndCenter works on article pages of supported publications. Home pages, section pages and other sites are not analysed. Open the article itself and try again.

Discussion unavailable

Not every article has a reader discussion — the Article surface works without one. If the panel says “No discussion found on this page”, there is nothing to map. If the comments were already showing before you opened RightLeftAndCenter, choose Reload & analyse so it can read them. If insights are “unavailable for this article right now”, try again later.

Analysis taking longer than usual

Long discussions take longer to read. The panel shows what it is doing and says “Taking a little longer than usual…” when it is. You can keep reading; the results appear when they are ready.

Sign-in or account issues

If the panel asks you to sign in to RightLeftAndCenter, your session has ended: sign in again with the same Google account and your History is kept. If it says “Sign in at the publisher”, sign in to the publication’s own site in that tab — RightLeftAndCenter never sees your publisher sign-in.

“You’ve reached the question limit for this article.”

Ask RLC allows up to 20 questions per article in any rolling 24 hours. Try again later.

Nothing happens when I click the RLC button

Reload the article page and try again. If you have just updated the extension, reload any open article tabs.
